UW-Platteville erects wind turbine utilizing ACI's Resin Transfer Molded Blade technology

ACI has recently installed a new CNC grinder custom made to grind tapers. ACI is one of only a few companies that provise this type of composite grinding technology. The grinder is able to grind lengths up to 30 feet.

Amalga Composites Announces Addition of Resin Transfer Molding Technology

March 7, 2011

Amalga Composites, Inc. (ACI) of West Allis, Wisconsin is pleased to announce the addition of Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) to their manufacturing processes.  RTM is the process of infusing resin, under pressure, into dry fibers preformed and preplaced in a closed cavity mold.  The company is currently using it to develop both RTM and Light RTM capabilities on a selection of parts.

ACI is a leader in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of filament-wound products, compression molded products and machining of composite components since 1966.  ACI's doctoral level engineering staff, with more than 60 years of combined experience, provides solutions for today's technical challenges.  ACI is ISO9001:2008 Certified with a full service precision machine shop.

Our products are used in a broad base of applications:  Autonomous underwater vehicles, launch systems, unmanned vehicles, defense, RO vessels, exploration instrumentation systems, pumps, rewind shafts, drive shafts, pneumatic cylinders, valve actuators and can replace metal in many applications.

COMPOSITE WIND TURBINE COUPLER TUBING

Amalga Composites designs, engineers and manufactures composite coupler tubing for wind turbines.  Our composite tubing is light weight, high strength and corrosion resistant and is an up-grade from steel.  Our composite tubing can be designed as an insulator to prevent electrical arcing between the generator and gear box of the wind turbine.

CARBON FIBER ROBOTIC ARM

ACI was tasked with manufacturing a High Modulus Carbon Fiber Robotic Arm for a Narcotics Car Inspection Unit for the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

The High Modulus Carbon Fiber Robotic Arm components included:
  • 22 inch inside diameter HM Carbon Fiber Tube x 108.250 inch length
  • 20 inch inside diameter HM Carbon Fiber Tube x 65 inch length
  • 12 inch inside diameter HM Carbon Fiber Tube x 108.250 inch length
  • Aluminum flanges and reducing coupler

ACI adhesively bonded the aluminum flanges & reducer coupler, machined the outside diameter and laser aligned the hole placement between flanges.  Total assembled length 281.50 inches.

Our engineering and manufacturing cabpabilities provided our customer with a high quality and functional prototype.

CRUSHING THE COMPETITION

                   #1                                             #2                                              #3

Here is an example of a crush test done on one of our 16 inch inside diameter x .250 inch wall fiberglass/epoxy tubes.
  • First picture shows a deflection of 3 inches with the force of 900 lbs.
  • Second picture shows a deflection of 7 inches with the force of 1600 lbs.
  • Third picture shows a deflection of 11 inches with the force of 2300 lbs.

Tube failed at 2400 lbs of compressive force.

ACI designs and engineers fiberglass/epoxy cores as a light weight, corrosion resistant and lower cost direct replacement for steel, aluminum and brass.

Our cores are a direct replacement for cardboard cores because of our high strength, tight tolerances, non contamination to product, non conductive and longer re-usable life cycle.

Our fiberglass/epoxy tubing is also dent and shatter resistant.

   FIBERGLASS CORE W/ STEEL END

Here is an example of our light weight fiberglass cores with a protective steel end.
This core is 6 inch inside diameter x .250 inch wall thickness x 120 inch.
We have supplied composite cores to many different industries for over twenty years.
